Nursing your Chihuahua

Bathing

When it comes to bathing your Chihuahua, you can hear different opinions from other Chihuahua owners (as well as veterinarians). The debate is that bathing your dog too often will cause the natural oils in its coat to diminish while others say that shampooing regularly will help to enhance and
enrich the coat.

Typically bathing your Chihuahua once every month or two with a mild pet shampoo will do fine.
Of course, each Chihuahua varies and some are cleaner than others. You may need to bathe your dog mere or less, depending on their type of coat and other factors. Your nose and common sense can be the judge when it comes to your particular situation.

When bathing your Chihuahua, avoid getting water on its ears. If this happens, be sure to use a soft washcloth and dry the ear completely. Water that comes into the ear may cause infection. Each time you bathe your Chihuahua, occasionally pay attention to its ears for about one week to ensure no redness, oozing, or odor has developed. If you notice any signs of an ear infection, contact your veterinarian.

Remember that Chihuahua get cold easily, so regardless of the season, be sure to wrap your dog in a nice, warm towel and then use a hair dryer at a safe distance (and on low heat) until the coat is dried.

Grooming

If your Chihuahua has a short coat, brushing it once a week will help keep it shiny and healthy. A soft-bristle brush or cloth should be sufficient. However, if you have a long haired Chihuahua you should increase the brushing to two or three times each week (if not more).

Some people prefer to have their long haired breed clipped by a professional dog groomer to eliminate the need for so much brushing, which is fine. However, if you choose to take your long coat Chihuahua to a groomer, make sure you start it out at a very young age to avoid causing stress.

You can keep your dog’s eyes clean by dripping a small amount of saline solution onto a cotton ball and then gently wiping its eyes. Because a Chihuahua’s eyes tear regularly, they can develop a tearstain, which is especially noticeable on blonde coloured dog’s.

The saline will clean the eyes and reduce or eliminate the stain. This should be done once or twice a week depending on how bad the tear around the eyes is. If you notice the tearing is associated wich a red or bloodshot eye or white discharge, the problem is probably an infection, which will need to be treated by your veterinarian.

Nails

Chihuahuas are pets that usually stay indoors, meaning they have little opportunity to wear their nails down naturally. For this reason, your pet should have its nails trimmed at least once month. Since Chihuahuas are so small, nail trimmers designed for cats may actually work the best. By trimming your dog’s nails at a young age, they will become accustomed to the process, making it easier for both you and your dog.

When dogs have light or white nails, being able to see where the beginning of the nail bed is located is easy to do. However, for dogs which black nails, you have to make an educated guess. As a general guideline, keep just the tip trimmed. If you keep current which the nail trimming, you should never have to take more than the very tip off.

Generally, you’d want to clip one nail at a time, talking calmly to your Chihuahua. Most are very picky and don’t like the nails being done. Also, don’t wait so long to trim them that their nails “curl” up, as it can hurt them when they walk. If they are extra fussy, you could always trim their nails during the same time that you bathe them or trim only one nail a day so they have time to get used to it.
